Joanna Ratajczak: On your  Album ' Balacobaco in New York'  you recorded in NY in 2003 - in JazzRio I play 'New York 'U' don't like me but I love 'U''- why the title?

Hélio Seródio:
New York is a very special city for Jazz Musicians not because you can make money with Jazz over there but because you can learn a lot about Music, playing and the business of making music and the most important of all is the possibility  to play with the best musicians of the world, most of then are living there. At the same time, this circumstances creates a lot of difficulties for me to have my first "Gig", they didn't let me play easy, so that I tought, " they have something personal against me or my music". This Music, NY "U" don't like me but I love "U", composed for a Quintet,  reflects this situation.

JR: And after that you came to Berlin- How is it LOVE or HATE?

HS:
Oh! I think it is Love. Berlin remembers me Rio de Janeiro, not because of the Landscape or the people of course but the "Kaos", the controlled Kaos. I hope that Berlin turn into a better City for Arts and real artists.

JR:
How is Berlin for a Brazilian artist / what are you artistic plans in Berlin?

HS:
Adaptation, improvisation are most likely Brazilian qualities.
I just Jazz my life! Brazil is where I am.
I am working on create a Better platform for good Brazilian musicians like my own Jazz club that I will open after the Football World Cup. Other Project is the "Brasilofonia", this will be a Berlin Home Band for artists coming from Brazil, US or wherever  to play here, so they come alone and play his songs with us.

JR:
But you are not only a musician- tell us smth. about your paintings.

HS:
When I was a Kid, I think with 5 or something like that , I began to compose for the drawings I have made with my carbon pencil. At the time I had no Instrument except my voice and my pencil so drawed the music I had on my head. My Mother asked me what it was, the drawing I have made so I began to sing the drawings. My Mother did not understood and nobody in my Family, 4 Brothers and 3 Sisters. I was the youngest on this Family with no Artists. It was difficult at the begin but some years later when I was seven I became my first Acoustic guitar and began to paint with the tunes of it.

JR:
Have you found the sound of Berlin? Can we expect 'Balacobaco in Berlin' soon?

HS:
Yes! I think so. I have like more than 30 new compositions to choose for my next album and most of then I made here in Berlin they will be sure like Berlin goes Samba-funk-jazz with a touch of the 70ies.

JR:
Who would you like to work on the new CD  with- maybe some German artist?

HS:
I would love to work with Till Broner, Soeren Fischer and my Trio of course.
